Bone tumors

Periosteal chondroma

BoneBenignChondrogenic tumours

Epidemiology

A benign cartilage tumor of the bone surface, most common in children, adolescents, and young adults. Because it lies on the bone surface, gentle cortical erosion can be expected; what is concerning is rapid growth or a soft-tissue mass.

Basic features

It usually causes local pain or swelling and can gently erode the outer bone (cortex) without aggressively invading the bone.

Usual treatment

Resection or curettage is indicated if there are symptoms, growth, or doubt about a more aggressive cartilage lesion.

Outcomes and prognosis

Local control is very good when it is completely removed, with a low recurrence rate; malignant transformation is exceptional.

This information is general and does not replace a medical evaluation. A musculoskeletal tumor must be interpreted together with imaging, physical examination, biopsy when appropriate and each patient's context.

Specialist evaluation

If you have a mass, a bone lesion or a report suggesting a tumor, book an evaluation.
