Epidemiology
A benign variant of lipoma, classically found on the shoulder, chest wall, or back of adult men. Its superficial location on the shoulder, chest wall, or back helps recognize it and avoid confusing it with liposarcoma.
Basic features
It may feel more solid than a common lipoma, but its clinical and histological features are benign; unlike an atypical lipomatous tumor (which shows MDM2 amplification), it usually expresses CD34 and shows loss of RB1, which confirms its benign nature.
Usual treatment
It is resected if it is symptomatic, grows, or raises diagnostic doubt about an atypical adipocytic tumor.
Outcomes and prognosis
The outcome is very favorable and no metastasis is expected.
