Epidemiology
A benign tumor made of fat, very common in adults. A deep, painful, growing, or larger-than-5 cm fatty mass must not automatically be assumed to be a simple lipoma without adequate imaging.
Basic features
A soft, movable, and usually superficial mass. Deep, large, or growing lesions require imaging studies.
Usual treatment
A typical, symptom-free lipoma needs no treatment or follow-up. Removal is considered if it hurts, grows, limits activity, or if another type of lesion cannot be ruled out.
Outcomes and prognosis
Excellent. Recurrence after complete removal is low, and a common lipoma does not turn into a liposarcoma.
